What are Majors?

London Marathon

The Majors are a group of select marathons that are part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. The requirements to become a Major are increasingly demanding and only the best 42K events make it. This is the case of Boston, Berlin, London, New York, Chicago and Tokyo.

Getting a number for these races is more and more complicated every year. To get a race bib, try your luck in a raffle or hire a travel+accommodation+bib pack with an agency are the best options to participate. Running a Major is the goal of all runners, completing all six, a dream. To win that longed-for medal is only within the reach of a privileged few. According to the Abbott World Marathon Majors, at the beginning of 2024 there were 12,772 finishers from 121 different countries.

And the Majors began 18 years ago. It was in 2006 when this international competition was formed, which then encompassed only five events, since the Tokyo Marathon was added in 2013. Everything points to Sydney being the seventh Major.
